Year 3

Welcome to Finch Class, Year 3, Lower Key Stage 2

Welcome to the Spring Term 2024

We had a brilliant first term together, and we're looking forward to watching the children continue to flourish over the coming months!

We will kick off our learning in English with a focus on fables, reading a variety of these and working out what the hidden morals are. Through our core text, War and Peas, we will use the words and images as a basis for writing creatively about the characters, in the style of a news report, and in a persuasive speech. We'll finish off the unit as budding authors, writing our own version of the story!

We start Maths this term with some exploration of length, measuring things of different sizes and choosing appropriate units to do so. We will go on to convert from one unit to another, and solve problems involving length. Later in the term, we will be spotting patterns in the 2s, 4s and 8s times tables, and we will venture into column addition and subtraction.

Our first Geography unit is based on volcanoes and earthquakes, and - prepare yourselves - the unit will end with a bang! In RE we will be learning all about Hinduism, with a focus on Diwali. In Science, we shall be continuing our exploration of light. In Music, we will be working on our singing in the context of the Vikings. In Computing, we will be creating our own video trailers!

Once again, the children voted for our next class novel, and they voted overwhelmingly for The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. We can't wait to share it with them!

In PE, we will be dancing and playing invasion games. PE days will be changing to Mondays and Thursdays. Please make sure your child comes to school dressed in their PE kit on those days, including clothes appropriate for cold weather.
