PE and Sport Premium
The Primary PE and Sport Premium is ring-fenced government funding provided to primary schools to improve the quality of physical education, physical activity and sport. The funding is intended to create sustainable improvements in PE and school sport so that all pupils develop healthy, active lifestyles and enjoy being physically active.
At Tewin Cowper Church of England Primary School, our approach is shaped by our mustard seed vision and our school motto: Believe, Grow, Succeed. We believe that when children are given the opportunity to be active, challenged and supported, small experiences can grow into lifelong habits of health, confidence and wellbeing. We therefore use our funding carefully to widen participation, strengthen staff expertise and provide high-quality sporting opportunities for all pupils.
How we use the PE & Sport Premium
The grant is used to enhance and extend opportunities for pupils beyond the core PE curriculum. Funding supports the following key areas:
Developing staff expertise and confidence
We invest in high-quality professional development for teachers so they can deliver engaging, progressive and inclusive PE lessons. This ensures that strong PE provision is sustainable and embedded across the school.
Increasing participation in physical activity
Funding enables us to provide a wide range of extra-curricular and lunchtime opportunities that encourage pupils to be active beyond curriculum PE. These include clubs such as football, netball, multi-sports, dodgeball, tag rugby and Spy Club.
We are also developing our outdoor play provision through the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) project, which supports active, imaginative and inclusive play at lunchtime. The OPAL approach encourages children to move, explore, collaborate and develop physical confidence through a wide variety of play experiences.
These opportunities are designed to be inclusive and accessible so that pupils of all ages and abilities can take part, develop new skills and build confidence through physical activity.
Providing opportunities for competitive sport
Through the Hertford and Ware School Sports Partnership, pupils participate in inter-school festivals and competitions such as athletics, cross country and gymnastics. These experiences allow pupils to represent the school, develop teamwork and build confidence in competitive environments. Our commitment to providing a wide range of sporting opportunities and encouraging participation for all pupils has also been recognised through the Gold School Games Mark, celebrating our strong engagement in school sport and competition.
Supporting inclusive sport and physical activity
We ensure that opportunities are accessible to all pupils, including targeted activities and clubs that encourage participation, confidence and enjoyment in sport regardless of ability or experience. Our inclusive approach ensures that all pupils have the opportunity to take part in physical activity and experience success.
Promoting active and healthy lifestyles
As a village school, we actively encourage walking, cycling and scooting to school wherever possible. Pupils also benefit from regular walks to St Peter’s Church, the school allotment and local woods. Workshops and safety sessions help pupils develop awareness of road safety and active travel.
Impact of the funding
The impact of the PE and Sport Premium is carefully monitored by school leaders to ensure that it:
-
Increases pupil participation in physical activity
-
Improves confidence and engagement in sport
-
Supports inclusion and equal access to opportunities
-
Raises the profile of physical activity and wellbeing across the school
-
Creates sustainable improvements in the quality of PE teaching
Despite being a small school, many of our pupils regularly take part in local sporting events and competitions. These opportunities allow children to challenge themselves, represent the school community and develop the teamwork, resilience and confidence that sport can nurture.
Statutory reporting
In line with Department for Education requirements, schools must publish how the Primary PE and Sport Premium is spent and the impact it has on pupils’ participation and attainment in PE and sport.
