Autumn 2

In Design and Technology this term, we have been making book sleeves to keep our treasured books safe! We came up with some design criteria, then designed our sleeve to match these. Then we made a paper template that would help us to create our final product.

The sewing was challenging, but we learnt SO much from our mistakes and repeated attempts to get different elements of the making process right.

We kept on reflecting on our work throughout the process. Comments included:

  • My knot keeps on coming through the fabric. I need to make it bigger by tying it more times.
  • I haven’t left enough thread to tie a knot in the end. I need to unpick some of it to give me more thread to tie.
  • I’ve sewed both sides together by mistake when attaching my zipper. I need to undo it and try again.
  • My press stud is coming off. I think I need to sew it on more securely.
  • The parts of my press stud don’t line up properly. I need to take one off and reattach it in the correct place.
  • I found it really hard to tie knots before, but I’m much better at it now.
  • I’m proud of my running stitch. It’s really straight, and it keeps the fabric together well.

Well done for your perseverance, Juniper Class!

Autumn 1

This term, the children were learning about how children's lives have changed throughout history, focusing on the Tudor and Victorian times, and comparing this with their lives today. We visited the British Schools Museum in Hitchin to find out more about this. The children experienced a strict Victorian school lesson, visited the original Headmaster's house, and took part in a Victorian drill (like a PE lesson).
