Autumn 1
English has been a busy and exciting series of lessons with the children learning to write poetry based on The Tree and The River. A story, that is told without words, of the changes to the world around a tree established near a river. Sounds interesting? The children loved digging in and trying to use personification (giving inanimate objects human like characteristics) in their poems.
Our second unit saw the children exploring Monsters of the World, learning how to organise a non-chronological report complete with labelled diagrams, headings and subheadings and the effective use of parentheses. Please ask your child to explain what this is. They really enjoyed exploring morphology where they had the opportunity to create new words and apply them to their writing.
In Maths we have learnt about place value including decimals and specifically what happens when we multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000. The children have enjoyed creating factor bugs which have helped them identify factors and multiples.
Science learning has been centred around separating materials. The children have made their own mixtures using different substances and explored a variety of ways to retrieve the substances they included. These methods include:
- Using your fingers
- Sieving
- Filtration
- Evaporation following dissolving
Loads of experiments have been used and a great deal of fun had!
Our RE unit has focused on the Hindu belief of Moksha - finding different pathways to reach enlightenment. The children have looked at stories from the faith and the impact of being able to choose the route you wish to take and what the consequences might be. They have become very enlightened (no pun intended). Did you know that the Snakes and Ladders game is based on this belief?
History this half term has focused on The Vikings and determining if they were Raiders, Traders or something else. We have learnt how to identify a warship over a trading vessel as well as the reasons why the Vikings travelled as far and as wide as they did. We have learnt some of the towns and cities that were established by the Vikings and of the attack on Lindisfarne. They have imagined they were witnesses to an attack and wrote to a family member describing the event.
In D and T this half term, the children in Year 5 have been busy learning how to cut vegetables safely, create labelling for jars with the ultimate outcome being creating and tasting a pasta sauce. They have enjoyed each and every step with Monday this week being the taste session.
