Modern Foreign Language (MFL)

French

  • At Tewin Cowper Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language broadens children’s horizons and builds confidence in communication. Inspired by our mustard seed vision, we nurture small steps in language learning so that pupils grow into confident, curious and successful language learners.

French is taught to all pupils in Key Stage 2, using the Language Angels scheme of work, providing a consistent, progressive and engaging approach to language learning.

What we want children to learn

At Tewin Cowper, our intent is to develop pupils’ confidence and competence in French, enabling them to enjoy learning a new language and prepare successfully for further language study.

    We aim for pupils to:

  • Develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in French

  • Understand how language works, including key grammatical structures

  • Build accurate pronunciation and intonation

  • Communicate ideas, opinions and information with increasing confidence

  • Develop cultural awareness and an appreciation of similarities and differences between French-speaking countries and their own

  • Our curriculum is aligned with the National Curriculum for Languages and the DfE Languages Programme of Study for Key Stage 2. It ensures pupils of all abilities develop secure foundations in the five key language skills: speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar.
In doing so, pupils are prepared for a smooth transition to secondary language learning.

    How learning happens

French is taught using the Language Angels scheme, which provides a well-sequenced and progressive curriculum across Key Stage 2. Lessons are delivered weekly and can be reinforced through shorter sessions to support retention and confidence.

Lessons are carefully structured with clear learning objectives and include a range of engaging teaching strategies, such as:

  • Songs, rhymes and spoken language activities
  • Interactive games and digital resources

  • Reading and writing tasks

  • Differentiated activities to support and challenge learners

  • Each lesson focusses on a combination of the five key language skills, ensuring balanced and meaningful language development. Adaptive teaching ensures all pupils can access learning, including those with SEND, through variation of tasks, grouping and adult support.

  • The Language Angels online platform supports high-quality delivery by providing staff with consistent resources and clear progression, while also offering opportunities for pupils to consolidate learning at home.

  • What children achieve

Assessment is built into the Language Angels programme through:

  • Pupil self-assessment using ‘I can do…’ statements

  • Skills-based assessments that track progress across the five key language skills

  • These assessments enable teachers to monitor progress, identify gaps and ensure pupils are meeting National Curriculum expectations.

  • By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written French

  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and accurate pronunciation

  • Read and understand familiar words, phrases and simple texts

  • Write phrases and sentences from memory and adapt language to express ideas

  • Understand key grammatical structures and how French compares to English

  • Show curiosity and respect for other cultures

  • Meet the end of key stage expectations in the National Curriculum for Languages

  • As a result, pupils leave Tewin Cowper believing in their ability to learn languages, growing in confidence and cultural understanding, and succeeding as enthusiastic language learners ready for the next stage of their education.
