PE

At Tewin Cowper Primary School, we believe that physical education plays a vital role in children’s health, wellbeing and personal development. Inspired by our mustard seed vision, we nurture positive attitudes towards physical activity so that small steps grow into lifelong healthy habits, confidence and success.

What we want children to learn

At Tewin Cowper, we use the Get Set 4 PE scheme as the basis for our PE curriculum. Our intent is to provide an inclusive, progressive and engaging PE curriculum that enables all pupils to develop physical competence, confidence and a love of being active.

We aim for pupils to:

  • Enjoy regular physical activity and develop positive attitudes towards sport and exercise

  • Build a wide range of fundamental movement skills and physical competencies

  • Develop confidence, resilience and perseverance through physical challenge

  • Learn to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

  • Understand the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle for physical and mental wellbeing

Our PE curriculum meets the requirements of the National Curriculum and supports pupils’ physical, social and emotional development.

How PE is taught

PE is taught using the Get Set 4 PE scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. The scheme ensures clear progression of skills, knowledge and vocabulary across the school.

The curriculum covers a broad range of physical activity areas, including:

  • Fundamental movement skills

  • Dance

  • Gymnastics

  • Games (including invasion, net and striking games)

  • Athletics

  • Fitness

Lessons are structured to ensure high levels of participation and engagement. Get Set 4 PE supports inclusive practice through clear differentiation, adaptations and challenge, enabling all pupils to access learning and experience success.

Swimming is a statutory part of the curriculum. All pupils take part in swimming lessons during the Summer term using our on-site outdoor swimming pool, while older pupils also attend deep water swimming lessons at Stevenage Leisure Centre to develop water confidence and safety skills.

What children achieve

Through regular participation in curriculum PE, pupils:

  • Develop confidence, coordination and physical competence

  • Improve fitness and understanding of healthy lifestyles

  • Demonstrate teamwork, resilience and positive attitudes to challenge

  • Build essential swimming and water safety skills

By the time pupils leave Tewin Cowper, they are confident, physically active learners who understand the importance of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.

Sports Premium

(Funding to enhance provision beyond curriculum PE)

Sports Premium is ring-fenced government funding used to enhance and extend PE and sport opportunities. It does not replace curriculum PE, which is delivered by class teachers using Get Set 4 PE.

How we use the PE & Sport Premium

The funding is used to:

  • Increase participation in physical activity beyond curriculum lessons

  • Provide a wide range of extra-curricular clubs, including football, netball and multi-sports

  • Enable pupils to take part in competitions and festivals through the Hertford and Ware School Partnership

  • Support staff development and confidence in delivering high-quality PE

  • Offer inclusive lunchtime and targeted physical activity opportunities

Despite being a small school, pupils regularly participate in inter-school competitions such as athletics, cross country and gymnastics, providing opportunities for all pupils to represent the school.

Promoting active lifestyles beyond PE

Alongside curriculum PE, we actively promote healthy lifestyles through:

  • Encouraging walking, cycling and scooting to school

  • Regular walks to St Peter’s Church, the school allotment and local woods

  • Road safety, cycling and scooter safety workshops

Impact of the PE & Sport Premium

The impact of the funding is carefully monitored to ensure it:

  • Increases pupil participation in physical activity

  • Improves confidence and engagement in sport

  • Supports inclusion and equal access to opportunities

  • Raises the profile of physical activity and wellbeing across the school

Statutory information detailing how the PE & Sport Premium Grant is allocated and its impact is published on our website in line with GOV.UK requirements.
