PSHE
At Tewin Cowper Primary School, we believe that PSHE plays a vital role in supporting children’s personal development, wellbeing and readiness for life beyond school. Inspired by our mustard seed vision, we nurture small steps in emotional understanding and social awareness so that pupils grow in confidence, resilience and responsibility.
From this year, PSHE is taught using the Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE scheme, providing a consistent, inclusive and progressive approach to personal development education.
What we want children to learn
Our intent is to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop a strong sense of self and positive relationships with others
- Understand how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy
- Learn how to manage emotions, make safe choices and seek help when needed
- Develop respect for diversity, difference and the wider community
- Build knowledge and skills to support future life, learning and employment
-
Our PSHE curriculum supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, promotes British values and is aligned with the Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) statutory guidance and the PSHE Association programme of study.
How PSHE is taught
PSHE is taught through the Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced and age-appropriate curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. Learning is structured to build progressively, allowing pupils to revisit key themes with increasing depth and understanding.
The curriculum is organised into key themes, including:
- Families and relationships
- Health and wellbeing
- Safety and the changing body
- Citizenship and economic wellbeing
-
Lessons are taught in a safe, supportive environment and encourage discussion, reflection and respectful listening. A range of teaching strategies is used, including stories, role play, discussion, and scenario-based learning, ensuring lessons are engaging and accessible to all pupils.
Adaptive teaching ensures all pupils can participate fully, with opportunities for further challenge and deeper thinking where appropriate. Teachers are supported with clear guidance and resources to deliver lessons confidently and consistently.
What children achieve
Assessment in PSHE is ongoing and largely formative, focusing on pupil engagement, understanding and the ability to apply learning to real-life situations.

By the time pupils leave Tewin Cowper, they will:
- Have the knowledge and confidence to make informed, safe and healthy choices
- Understand how to build and maintain positive relationships
- Show respect for themselves, others and the wider world
- Recognise and manage emotions and understand where to seek support
- Be prepared for the challenges and opportunities of secondary school and beyond
-
As a result, pupils leave Tewin Cowper believing in themselves, growing in emotional intelligence and resilience, and succeeding as confident, respectful and responsible individuals.
